The best Croydon sunsets

I love sunsets. The seamless mixing of colours in a warm gradient is so beautiful. I'm always on the lookout for spots with a good westward view. Photography can be as simple as being in the right place at the right time and this is especially true of sunsets.

Croydon Flyover is particularly unattractive, but the view west towards Waddon is a surprisingly good spot for sunsets. I was fortunate enough to be passing by at the right time in November 2017 and I took the photo below of the sunset reflecting off Bernard Wetherill House, Croydon Council's HQ.

Contemporary glass buildings are great for reflections. This is another view of Bernard Wetherill House, in September 2018.

Another great spot to observe the changing skyline of Croydon is the footpath behind the Crown Court on Altyre Road, near East Croydon station. I took this photo of pigeons flying around the Clocktower from this point.

A winter afternoon in Wandle Park can be magical.

From Park Hill, close to the town centre, you can look across the railway line and view the ever-changing skyline. This photo was taken in September 2019, when the four towers being built on the former Taberner House site were smaller than the Clocktower. Bernard Wetherill House is on the left.

There is a partial view of the sunset down Crown Hill, looking towards Croydon Minster. In this photo, the Almshouses are on the right.

The open space outside the Fairfield Halls and the Queens Gardens can give some views of the sunset but they are restricted by the many buildings.

Sometimes a particularly beautiful sky can be seen right across the town centre, as in this photo from December 2019.

Duppas Hill Recreation Ground has a west facing view and is a popular roosting site for ring-necked parakeets. I took this photo from the other side of Duppas Hill Road.

Following the railway line further south, at South Croydon station, there's a footbridge which gives sunset views.

Normanton Meadow, a small park off Normanton Road in South Croydon, has beautiful views.

Addiscombe has some good sunset viewing spots, including Addiscombe Railway Park and Addiscombe Recreation Ground, as well as roads like Dalmally Road.

A beautiful sunset at South Norwood Lake.

I hope to write a part two when I find more sunset viewing spots.
