Beautiful Croydon: an oxymoron?

Perhaps you laughed when you saw the name of this blog. Croydon doesn't have the best reputation, after all. Tower blocks and chicken shops, looting and fires tend to be the images people associate with this South London borough.

Yet Croydon is so much more than that. Home historically to archbishops' palaces, the world's first public railway, and the UK's first major airport, there's far more to Croydon than many people realise. With over 120 parks and green spaces, there's plenty to explore. There are sheep, goats, cattle, and horses grazing at various sites around the borough, plus wildlife including deer, foxes, lizards, slow worms and a huge range of birds that can be seen. Through this blog, I hope to highlight some of the beauty and points of interest to be found here.

I am a keen amateur photographer and nature observer, so I will include lots of photos I've taken. Unless otherwise captioned, all photos were taken by me. My aim is to cover the length and breadth of Croydon, plus the odd foray into neighbouring areas.

  2. You can add badgers to that list. There are dozens of badger setts across the borough. I have heard that some of them are mentioned in the doomsday book. Badgers maintain the same setts for centuries.
